HomeArchivesGreen RoomEd Morrissey Show Jay Carney: I don’t speak for Harry Reid, but Romney sure could resolve this by releasing those tax returns, huh?posted at 10:04 pm on August 7, 2012 by AllahpunditVia the Washington Free Beacon, why on earth is the White House press secretary wading into a dispute related to the presidential race? I’m sure GOP press secretaries have done that too for Republican incumbents but I don’t like it from either party. Carney’s supposed to be a liaison between the president and the media so that the public can stay informed about what’s going on with the executive branch. The only questions he should be fielding vis-a-vis Romney are when Team Mitt makes a charge about the administration’s policies that requires fact checking. The One’s paying Ben LaBolt for a reason, right? Let him be the one to navel-gaze on camera about the proper way for Romney to respond to Reid’s low-rent smear, not a guy who’s ostensibly some sort of public servant tasked with providing citizens with basic facts.
As for why Romney hasn’t yet released the returns, does anyone believe this?
Mitt Romney and his aides believe that — despite loud and nagging calls for him to release his tax returns — the candidate simply cannot afford to release his taxes now, even as some aides wish he would have put them out six months ago or more.
With less than three months to election day, the Romney campaign has passed the “point of no return,” as one Republican operative close to the campaign put it, beyond which there isn’t enough time for the media to digest the tax returns before the public starts to pay attention to the race.
“The complaining for more and more returns and the stories about how rich he is get old after a few weeks, but there aren’t a few weeks left,” the operative said. “Now we’ve got to keep doing what we’re doing and hope it isn’t too painful.”
If he put them out now, the press would spend two weeks buzzing about them and then everyone’s focus would shift to the conventions. In the meantime, Romney would have announced his VP pick and there would be new jerky little distractions to keep the media busy. By the time of the debates, when voters are really tuned in, no one would care anymore. Unless there really is something damaging in there that he’s hiding, the suspicions he’s creating by not releasing them are probably hurting him worse than releasing would. But I don’t know; maybe the dynamics of this now are such that if he produces the returns, he’ll be seen as “giving in” to Democratic pressure and some conservative voters will be mad at him. Just seems hard to understand why he’d let this be a liability if the truth is that it isn’t one.

Sounds like you’re having a tough day, PolAg.
I’m sure Allahpundit wants us to win, but he has a responsibility to write with some dispassion. Some. AP is being analytical. I don’t agree with a word of it, but he has to analyze it and put it out there for a million people to read (no exaggeration).
We, on the other hand, can let our emotions carry us away.
How about you writing in the comments here a solution to the current situation? I’m sure it would be good and I’d like to read it.
I’ll check back in a little while.

sharrukin on August 7, 2012 at 11:14 PMI think Romney has to attack to win.
jaime on August 7, 2012 at 11:04 PM
Sir, it’s not even attack as just show some “fight”. Truth is on our side and we need to be pro active. OK, attack is even better.
arnold ziffel on August 7, 2012 at 11:16 PMThis is the question that needs to be put to Carney: “If Mitch McConnell stood up in front of the Senate and said the president was a lousy student and probably applied as a foreign exchange student and challenged Obama to prove him wrong, would the president also not have an opinion on the matter?”
The Count on August 7, 2012 at 11:17 PMI can understand Allah’s point, and I would agree with it if we were dealing with decent people..but the Obama campaign is not decent…we have seen Romney called a felon, a liar, a tax cheat and a murderer. If they got hold of thousands of pages of tax returns with the names of partners and details about business dealings…we know they would lie about it…every day would be a new allegation, a new ad..it would not stop.
At the very least, Romney needs to get something out of it other than a lot of aggravation.
He did the full financial disclosure forms, which have a lot of detail and two years of returns. That is quite a lot of information right there.

You’re right, arnold. Fight Back is good and may be enough to win. Attack is better.

No need to explain his past, just explain the $3 Million spent hiding it.

.
Which is why my opening statement was:
“After reading your latest Eeyorism post …”
which was why I referenced the title to be very clear I was taking exception to his entire post on the subject.
His best efforts only rise up to the level of a milque toast voice for the conservative cause when he stays on topic, applies his intellect to achieve some unique insight on a current political issue without straying into RINO unicorn land.
Back when he prejudged the three Navy SEALS in Iraq – I stopped coming here for more than a month because the disgust I felt for that article was so great. (Especially loved him second guessing their decision to go to court martial /s)
When AP is in full Eeyore mode his content is much worse, as he is in this post for my money, where he does nothing but give credence to the sleaze Reid and Carney are peddling rather than calling it the worst aspects of American politics and then leaving it to stink on its own merits.
I will obey the rules of the site but so far as I know that does not mean when one of the staff posts something vile it has to be treated with kid gloves.
PolAgnostic on August 7, 2012 at 11:41 PMHe has tripled down on the tax returns issue, I think he’s in too deep to release them now. The smart thing would have been to release five years of returns when he came under pressure during the primaries, then he could have touted that he released more than twice as much as John Kerry. But the establishment GOP media cocooned Romney from the tax demands from Newt and Santorum, and here we are now.
Lawdawg86 on August 7, 2012 at 11:42 PMNothing is resolved by releasing the returns except the Democrats and their owned-and-operated MSM get a big anti-fat cat hammer to swing around. Let them twist. The American public is not clamoring for the release of these returns. Most Americans understand the desire to keep them private because they wouldn’t want theirs made public. Only the Democrat leadeerhip and their paid flunkies are clamoring. That tells you something. It’s all they got. And if the returns have not been releaed by the debates you can count on the Choomster-in-Chief to bring them up. Loser.
